The Therapeutic Process
This entire venture of therapeutic work - the subtlety, the challenge, the transformative potential :) - I have been fascinated by and engaged with for nearly a decade of my life, my entire adult life really. Immersing myself in it more fully and guiding the process with more sensitivity and skill I imagine will be a worthy commitment that will keep enriching the work and my clients' lives as much as it does my own. I want to take some time to muse on this delicate and beautiful process I am coming to better define and share. Here's a short list of what you can expect the process to be like and what my role and offering is to the clients I have the privilege of working with.
1. Together we build a container in which respect, compassion, and understanding interweave to create permission and possibility for you to reveal more and more of yourself - to yourself and to a trusted witness. This creates an opportunity to be really seen, heard, accepted, and valued - to be unveiled and unfurled - an experience many find supportive, nourishing, and healing. Deepening this process across time we may come to both discover who you really are as well as consciously create the self you want to inhabit, the truth of your existence, and upon that basis, the purposeful directionality that is calling to you, waiting for you to usher it in to the world.
2. We use the foundation and vehicle of our developing relationship to explore and experiment with ways of being, working, and relating, uncovering unconscious scripts and patterns that get played out, and bringing them to the conscious light of day, so that they may be authentically uptaken, modified, or discarded in favor of emergent new possibilities. In essence, many I work with grow personally and spiritually toward greater freedom, flexibility, and resilience in their lives as they acquire new awareness, insight, and tools with a therapeutic companion who co-journeys with them.
3. The process really takes off, I have noticed, when clients shift into the awesome and at times daunting task of taking supreme responsibility for their own lives, which often develops in the incubating chamber of therapeutic work. This is the necessary accompaniment to freedom, to creating and cultivating lives that we can truly call "our own". A powerful addition to this orientation is a way of looking at and participating in our own inner process and field of experience that adds complexity, richness, and meaning to our lives, as we tap into the symbolic, the synchronistic, and the overarching themes that can animate our stories and vitalize our everyday life with significance and treasures.
I view the therapeutic process as specific and individual, based on your needs, the scope of the work, your goals, desire, and willingness to employ the process and your therapist. I want to be employed in this way as fully as possible. We will find the color, shape, and form of our therapeutic house as we plunge into the project and begin to create a shared world together. This is a great adventure I am passionate about and invested in taking with you.
